Is engine flushing a necessary procedure?

25 Apr 2024

The topic of engine flushing raises a lot of controversy among both drivers and mechanics. According to proponents, the use of a flush increases engine life and improves its performance. Opponents, on the other hand, believe that regular engine oil changes are sufficient for the proper functioning of the unit. In what situations is the use of a flush justified? Q Service Castrol network experts explain when the driver should consider engine flushing during a visit to the workshop.

Why use engine flushes?

Engine flushing involves cleaning the unit of deposits formed during engine operation with a special chemical agent. As the experts point out, the procedure should be performed just before changing the lubricant, e.g. oil. The purpose of engine flushing is to dissolve the impurities, deposits, and carbon build-up that excessively accumulate inside the engine during fuel combustion. These are then drained into the oil pan along with the old oil. This allows the fresh mixture to work in optimal conditions. Approximately 300-500 ml of chemical agent, i.e., an engine flush, is poured into the oil.

An engine flush is nothing more than an additive to engine oil. The product consists largely of naphtha and refinements whose job is to dissolve impurities in the oil content. This minimizes the risk of them settling and forming carbon buildup on engine components. Flushes also have protective additives that protect the parts of the power unit from seizure.

– Accumulated deposits can disturb the operation of the power unit and significantly shorten the life of components such as valves, manifolds, piston rings, EGR valve, or catalyst. To prevent this, simply add a flush just before changing the engine oil. The next required action is to start the drive and leave the car working at idle for about 10 minutes. During this time, the preparation together with the oil will reach every nook and cranny of the oil system and dissolve the accumulated deposits. The next step is to drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and refill the engine – explains Tadeusz Bogusz, owner of the “BOGUSZ” PHU S.C. workshop in Dzierżoniów, belonging to the Q Service Castrol network.

When should you use a flush?

A Q Service Castrol service network mechanic indicates the situations in which it is necessary to perform engine unit flushing. Among them is a reduction in engine performance or disturbing smoke from the exhaust pipe. This may be a signal that there are already a lot of impurities in the power unit that hinder the proper operation of the engine.

It is also worth using engine flushing if the driver is much delayed in changing the oil, e.g., no less than a year. In such a situation, the prophylactic use of an engine flush is a good solution. Moreover, performing the procedure is necessary if the car owner uses it for short distances.

– It is also worth deciding to flush the engine in the case of purchasing a used car. This is a preventive measure, during which the workshop employee can check whether the previous owner of the vehicle used oils with the right parameters recommended by the manufacturer – summarizes Tadeusz Bogusz.
