A tire factory located in Nokia, Finland, has obtained the international ISCC PLUS certificate. Based on this, it will be possible to change the raw materials used in the factory.

ISCC PLUS Certificate for Nokian Tyres Factory in Finland

Nokian Tyres’ factory in Nokia, Finland, has obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. Thanks to this certification, Nokian Tyres can introduce new sustainable raw materials with ISCC PLUS certification into their tire production.

Nokian Tyres will introduce certified raw materials when new flagship products appear. Using certified materials is an important step for the company towards achieving one of its main sustainability goals, which is to increase the share of recycled or renewable raw materials in tires to 50 percent by 2030.

“Nokian Tyres is working on replacing fossil materials with sustainable ones to achieve this goal. We are already using recycled and renewable raw materials in our tires, and the possibility of additional use of ISCC PLUS certified materials accelerates work and complements our own research and innovation in raw materials,” says Teemu Soini, Vice President of Innovation and Development at Nokian Tyres.

ISCC is a globally recognized sustainability certification system. ISCC PLUS certification also ensures compliance with strict environmental and social sustainability requirements and traceability at all stages of the supply chain. The certificate received by Nokian Tyres applies to the production of passenger car tires at the factory in Finland, and the company plans to certify other production sites as well.

Recently, Nokian Tyres reached another milestone in terms of sustainable raw materials – the company demonstrated the possibility of using a breakthrough new raw material in tires, presenting the Nokian Tyres Green Step Ligna concept tire in June 2024. It is the first tire in history made with UPM BioMotion™ RFF, a fully renewable wood-based lignin raw material. In the sidewalls of the concept tire, this material replaced all fossil carbon black.
