Peugeot 207 – knocking noise when starting

26 Mar 2021

The following question has reached Autodata staff:

Q: We are having trouble determining the cause of a knocking noise from the front of the vehicle when starting or reversing on a 2009 Peugeot 207. The noise is hearable and we determined it’s coming from the left front corner of the vehicle. We checked the steering, suspension and drive shaft components, but could not find the source of the fault in this area. Do you know what could cause such a noise?

A:  This problem has already been reported by other Peugeot 207 owners, and is caused by excessive play between the front wheel bearing and the axle knuckle. The front wheel bearing should be removed from the steering knuckle. Then apply a thin layer of grease available from the “Peugeot” parts department fig.1.1 to the indicated area. The ABS wheel rotation sensor must not be covered with grease. Install a new version of the front wheel bearing. The above steps should be repeated for the part on the other side. After the repair is completed, a test drive should be performed to see if the fault has been removed.
