Leaky oil filter element in 1.6 and 2.0 TDI

13 Dec 2022

Leakage of the OX 388D Eco oil filter element after installation in 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines can lead to excessive leakage, which can cause permanent damage to the engine. How can this be prevented?

After an oil change and associated filter replacement, leakage may occur in the oil filter housing area on VW Group diesel vehicles in the above-mentioned engines. The reason for this may be that the tightening torque of the housing cover is too high.

After changing the oil filter element, the cover is screwed back onto the housing – the permissible torque is 25 Nm (+5 Nm). If too much force is applied, the threads may be damaged and the cover deformed. The result is leakage at the housing cover and leakage of engine oil.

Important: When changing the filter, always use a torque spanner to comply with the manufacturer’s guidelines! To avoid damage, wet the new gaskets with clean engine oil before installation.
