Febi solutions: water pump replacement with gasket
The febi specialists advise on how to correctly replace the water pump in cars with 2.0 and 2.2 diesel engines from brands such as Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar, Lancia, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Opel, Peugeot, Toyota and Vauxhall.
Water pump failure in 2.0 HDi and 2.2 HDi engines – diagnosis
Engine coolant temperature warning light and engine control light on. The fault code “P0115 improper coolant temperature” was stored in the ECU engine controller.
Why does the water pump fail?
The factory-installed water pump uses a plastic impeller that can separate from the drive shaft. In this case, the water pump rotates without producing the required flow of fluid through the engine cooling system.
How to replace the water pump?
- Ensure that the fluid in the system has cooled, then remove the coolant filler cap.
- Remove the top supply line from the expansion tank and place it over the corresponding container.
- Start the engine and leave it idling. A small stream of coolant should flow from the hose. As the engine speed increases, the flow should increase. The lack of coolant flow may mean that the water pump impeller is not rotating.
- Remove the accessory drive belt and timing belt.
- Replace the damaged water pump with a new febi 39304, which has an improved design with a metal impeller. This eliminates the risk of potential defects in a water pump equipped with a plastic impeller. The febi company recommends that along with a new water pump, a new timing set and accessory drive belt should also be used. This will ensure adequate engine reliability.
- Refill the coolant system with fresh fluid, then vacuum bleed the system to remove any air from it. To check the proper operation of the cooling system, start the engine and check the coolant supply to the expansion tank again.
- Clear the error codes stored in the ECU engine controller.
