Clarios Invests in Altris. Development of Low-Voltage Sodium-Ion Batteries for Vehicles.

21 Oct 2024

Clarios has announced a strategic investment in Altris, specializing in sodium-ion battery technology. The aim of the collaboration is to produce low-voltage sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries for the automotive sector.

Collaboration and Opportunities for Technology Development

Clarios’ collaboration with Altris aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the automotive industry, especially in advanced low-voltage power systems. Sodium-ion batteries, using readily available and non-conflict minerals, are an ideal solution for this purpose.

Clarios, producing one in three low-voltage car batteries worldwide, will use its knowledge in battery management systems (BMS) and software to design a Na-ion battery system. Altris will focus on developing sodium-ion cell technology.

Every vehicle, including hybrid and electric, requires a low-voltage power source to power software-based functions such as steering and braking by wire, autonomous functions, and enhanced cabin features. Sodium-ion batteries are well-suited to meet these requirements while being sustainable and easy to recycle.

“The sodium-ion battery solution perfectly complements our portfolio, working in harmony with lithium-ion and lead-acid options to capture the best features of both: high performance and lower cost,” said Federico Morales-Zimmermann, Vice President and General Manager of Global OEM Customers and Technology at Clarios.

Clarios expects the investment will enable Altris to start commercial production in 2026.
