Installation of a water pump in the Toyota Carina and Corolla
Toyota used three different models of water pumps at the car production stage. When replacing, it is imperative to ensure that the aftermarket product fits the vehicle.
The differences between the pump models are shown in the photos below.
Caution!
The description of the replacement with the SKF VKPC 91416 water pump applies only to engines originally equipped with an Aisin pump and with a corresponding rear part. The problem affects TOYOTA Carina VI and Corolla VII/VIII – 1.6 (Engine code 4A-FE).
Using the wrong of two possible water pump (Aisan or SEM) can lead to:
- Impact/abrasion of the rotor of the VKPC 91416 pump against its rear part.
- Difficulties/Inability to install the VKPC 91416 pump because the rotor turns out to be too large in relation to the rear of the pump.
- Fluid leaks: Pumps marked Aisin and SEM cannot be used interchangeably (see below)
Installation recommendations
Always before proceeding with a repair check what model of pump is installed in the engine.
The VKPC 91416 pump is designed ONLY to replace the Aisin-designated pump and to work with the rear part of the Aisin pump.
Swapping pumps or seals from Aisin to SEM or vice versa leads to the serious problems described above.
