Two Important Manufacturers Join Forces to Develop Intelligent Tire Technology
Two automotive industry giants have undertaken collaboration to develop intelligent tire technology. As part of their joint efforts, they will combine their technologies to create a new product. What features will the tires of the future have?
Direction of Development: Bosch and Pirelli Collaboration in the Tire Area
Pirelli and Bosch have signed a joint development agreement. It aims to jointly create new solutions based on software and driving characteristics thanks to sensors integrated into tires, also known as in-tire sensors. For drivers, this means greater safety, comfort, and sustainability, as well as improved driving dynamics. Bosch and Pirelli share a vision of long-term cooperation and intend to jointly explore improved tire signal processing logic as a potential contribution to enhanced vehicle dynamics controllers.
Pirelli Cyber Tyre is the world’s first tire-based system with integrated sensors that collect data and transmit it to the vehicle for real-time processing. Bosch has already developed an ESP application specifically tailored to Pirelli tires in an initial joint project with hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili. The “Pirelli Cyber Tyre” technology in the Pagani Utopia Roadster transmits key tire information to the ESP control unit. This allows for optimal use of individual tire properties and performance, providing increased safety and customized driving conditions.
As a global technology and services provider, Bosch brings its hardware and software expertise at the system level to the development collaboration. Bosch is also a leader in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor technology and develops and produces tire pressure sensors using the “Bluetooth Low Energy” (BLE) standard. Combining this knowledge with Pirelli’s in-tire device technologies – both hardware and software, algorithms, and tire modeling – will enable real-time tire data collection, processing, and transmission, providing parameters to the vehicle’s electronic control system using very low power consumption BLE. Pirelli and Bosch are now aiming to use Bosch’s MEMS technology in in-tire applications.
