Can engine oil expire?

15 Apr 2020

How long can I store engine oils? Will they eventually expire? The question is answered by an expert the Head of Technical Department at Total.

“In most cases, engine oils don’t have specified expiry dates. They are chemical mixtures which don’t lose their properties during long-term storage. A minimum of 5 years for mineral oils and 10 years for synthetic oils are the assumed expiry periods. In the case of TOTAL products, the production dates are provided on the containers. Of course, the oils should be stored in tightly sealed containers limiting the potential access of dust or moisture. Storing engine oils in temperatures ranging from -20 to +60°C doesn’t lower their quality.”
