Canadian Parliament supports Right to Repair bill nr C 273!

The commitment to success by both the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA) and the Canadian automotive aftermarket industry resulted in a positive vote on Thursday 14th May 2009 for Bill C-273. The “Right to Repair” Bill C-273 proposed by MP Brian Masse is an Act to amend the Competition Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999). This new piece of legislation is designed to provide consumers with a broader range of choices when it comes to servicing newer vehicles. A majority of MPs in the Canadian Parliament voted in favour of sending Bill C-273 to Committee (247 Votes in Favour and 18 Against).
For the past 5 years, AIA has worked diligently in cooperation with a number of partnering associations and groups to ensure that MPs, the media and the industry at large understood clearly the issue at hand. While there is still a lot of work ahead at the Committee stage, this vote is a clear indication that AIA has successfully shown to elected representatives in the Canadian Parliament that a legislated solution is the only real mechanism to allow car owners to have access to a competitive vehicle repair market.

"Passage of bill C-273 is crucial to protecting jobs in Canada's automotive aftermarket and ensuring consumers have a right to repair their vehicle at their place of choice," said Marc Brazeau, president of AIA Canada.
The move by the Canadian House of Parliament is similar to the Euro 5 Regulation passed two years ago in the EU, and several organizations in the U.S. hope the American government follows suit with the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act.
A Parliamentary Committee will soon be receiving feedback on Bill C-273 from a number of groups. This process will result in the Committee submitting a report back to the Canadian Parliament later this year.
